Thomas Zehetmair to take the conductor’s stand for the Stanvanger Symphony Orchestra again on 19 January 2017

Thomas Zehetmair has enjoyed a regular, musically prolific collaboration with the orchestra – which  is well documented on a CD featuring Brahms’ 2nd Symphony set to be released early this year. During this concert, he will also be presenting Brahms’ 3rd Symphony and the 3rd Symphony of Sibelius.
Brahms’ 3rd Symphony was composed in 1883 during the “musical dispute” between his followers and the representatives of the New German School centred around Franz Liszt. Brahms held the view that music must be absolute and not be representational; he claimed that the value of music can only be measured based on its own intrinsic nature. Sibelius on the other hand takes a surprisingly classical approach in his 3rd Symphony (composed between 1904 and 1907) – the work is characterised by clarity and functionalism. Thomas Zehetmair does both conceptions justice with his astute approach. The regular collaboration between the conductor and Norway’s foremost orchestra appeals with its highly attuned playing and distinct tonal array.
