Thomas Zehetmair once again performs together with Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchester

For one week in November, Thomas Zehetmair will be performing with the Budapest Festival Orchester under the baton of Ivan Fischer. In six concerts that will span Europe, he will take to the stage to present Prokofiev’s second violin concerto.

In 1983, Ivan Fischer founded the Budapest Festival Orchester in his homeland of Hungary and has since served as its musical director. A CD featuring a recording of Bartok’s violin concertos testifies to the exceedingly fruitful collaboration between the orchestra, its conductor and Thomas Zehetmair.

Prokofiev wrote his second violin concerto in 1935, twenty years after his first one, and followed a style of “new simplicity” which he had since developed. In so doing, he selected a classic three-part form. The solo part, however, he fashioned to be exceedingly sophisticated and virtuosic. Thomas Zehetmaier has successfully mastered this piece – which comes as no surprise – through his technical precision and ever astute approach to his interpretation characterised by his deep commitment to musicality. When asked about his thoughts on Prokofiev’s violin concerto, he remarks: “I love this blend of intimacy, the full-blooded arias, the bold dynamic and exceedingly subtle dialogues between the solo violin and various other orchestral instruments.”
