Misión Tango

In addition to compositions by Astor Piazzolla (Tango Nuevo), who is probably one of the most frequently played composers on German concert stages when it comes to tango music, Cuarteto SolTango makes a point of playing mainly compositions from the golden era of tango. Tango culture reached its peak in the 30s and 40s. At that time, a variety of styles developed – such as the lyrical-romantic style of Aníbal Troilo or the rhythmically striking style of Juan d’Arienzo – which are still worth exploring today.

The Classical Tango as well as the Tango Nuevo require a high virtuosity from all players and have been set for the Orquestas Típicas by the arrangers of that time in a most complex way. The Cuarteto SolTango reduces the original large instrumentation to a chamber music format and presents the broad musical spectrum of tango music by structuring the many styles into so-called Tandas (3 pieces of the same style) – as is customary on traditional tango nights.

In the concerts of Cuarteto SolTango there is no printed program. The musicians announce the titles and tell in their moderation about the background and contents of the single pieces, anecdotes from the life of important tango musicians and explain why everyone should learn bandoneon…

A selection of the pieces can be heard on the albums Misión Tango and Sin Palabras.
