Christian Zacharias has exciting concerts in store

In March, audiences can look forward to exciting concerts with Christian Zacharias both at the conductor’s stand and on the piano in Frankfurt, Lugano and Winterthur. The programme will feature Mozart, Schumann, Schubert and their French colleagues Ravel, Rameau and Bizet.

In Frankfurt, he will conduct the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester with Ravel’s suite “Ma mère l’oye“ and Schumann’s 2nd symphony composed in 1845/46 for Schumann in attempt to cure his depression.

At a mere 19 years of age, Schubert composed his 4th symphony which Zacharias will be performing in Lugano alongside the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in addition to works by Mozart. Schubert himself nick named it “die Tragische” (the tragic) owing to the minor key and its preoccupation with Beethoven.

In Winterthur, the programme will focus on French music. Written in 1872, Bizet’s orchestral suite “L’ Arlésienne” was an immediate success at its original premiere in Paris. Excerpts from Rameau’s suite “Les Indes Galantes“ as well as Mozart can also be heard.

Mozart composed the majority of his piano concertos for his own use. During the performance, he conducted the orchestra from the piano, a customary practice at the time, which Christian Zacharias will also be observing in the upcoming performances of concerts no. 23, no. 24 and no. 25. It is a genuine delight to listen to Christian Zacharias and witness him masterfully assuming the two roles of pianist and conductor.
