Starting at the end of the 18th century with Beethoven and his Piano Concerto No. 2, the program moves on to Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony and finally returns to the beginning of the 19th century, concluding the program with Schubert’s Symphony No. 2.

On August 3rd and 4th Christian Zacharias is travelling to New York. Together with the festival orchestra of the Mostly Mozart Festival he will present a Mozart program consisting of the 38th symphony, two arias with the singer Rosa Feola as well as the piano concerto no. 25 in C major. This festival and its orchestra are the only ones in the US to dedicate their entire body of work to the classical epoch in music. With Zacharias they consult an expert of the Classical era whose performances are characterized by stylistic accuracy, musical maxims and aesthetical sounds.
Afterwards, Zacharias will journey on to Spain. On August 18th in San Sebatián, he will lead the Euskadiko Symphony Orchestra and the Andra Mari Choir through a program with Mozart’s piano concerto no. 24, Haydn’s symphony no. 49 and the requiem in C minor.

From June 3-12th, Christian Zacharias will take over the honorary role of president of the jury at the renowned Géza Anda Piano Competition in Winterthur and Zurich. The Géza Anda Foundation was founded in 1978 by the widow of the famous pianist for the promotion of young talent in the spirit of Anda, and since then supports many now famous musicians not only with prize money but also with engagements. Thanks to his enormous experience and musical far-sightedness, Zacharias is exactly the right person for the responsiblities as jury president and will contribute in a particularly artistic way by conducting the final concert with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. In this way, Christian Zacharias is able to pass on some of his wealth of experience to the young pianists.

Afterwards on June 20th, Christian Zacharias will be performing at the Paris Champs Elysées Theater and on June 22nd at the Mozart Festival in Würzburg. In both concerts, he directs the Orchester de chambre de Paris in a splendid Play & Conduct program with Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes, Haydn’s Symphony no. 91 and Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 17. Although their biographies overlap, the composers occupy separate worlds. True to style, Zacharias manages to link these worlds together.

This Spring, Christian Zacharias is on a recital tour with stops in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Spain. In his luggage, he has a program of Haydn sonatas and works from Bach. As pianist as well as a conductor, Christian Zacharias is one of the most important musicians of our time in the world. His solo recitals, intimate and direct encounters with his audience, testify to his deeply felt musicality and emotional devotion to art.

We congratulate Christian Zacharias on receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg!
As part of a concert with the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Gothenburg, Christian Zacharias was awarded an honorary doctorate on February 9th. On the program, one could enjoy Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Ravel’s Piano Concerto and Brahms Symphony no. 3.

On February 15th and 16th, Christian Zacharias conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in a classical program with Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 “La Poule” and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 19, tinted with French colors by Poulencs Sinfonietta from 1947. From Norway Christian Zacharias then travels to Canada. In Montréal, he will play Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major on February 21st, 24th, and 25th together with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Edo de Waart conducting. This early concerto shows Beethoven’s gradual detachment from his Viennese predecessors to his own genius. Christian Zacharias is just the right pianist for the musical sensitivity, attention to detail and technical accuracy that the work demands of the performer, and one can look forward to a masterful realization.

In the coming weeks Christian Zacharias will be presenting exciting projects throughout Europe as a conductor and soloist. On November 9th and 10th in Bilbao, he presents masterpieces of Viennese classical music with Haydn and Mozart, as well as Poulenc’s neoclassical Sinfonietta from 1948. From November 16 to 18th, Christian Zacharias will embark on a short journey through music history with the Gothenburg Symphony again shedding light on different musical epochs with Haydn, Schumann and Webern. On December 2nd in Ankara, Christian Zacharias conducts the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra with Haydn’s Symphony No. 49, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. Zacharias gives the music space to unfold its inner greatness, his interpretation full of subtle musical wisdom and history of convincingly elaborate performances.

From October 20-27, Christian Zacharias will be on tour with the Stuttgart Philharmonic. In the double function as pianist and conductor, he plays Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C minor and conducts Bruckner’s 6th Symphony in A major, and follows up the successful 2015 German tour with a Mozart / Bruckner program.

Works from Mozart in minor are rare and represent a special feature. Christian Zacharias unfolds the drama of the music incomparably, creates the symphonic character of the concerto and amazes by the supposed ease of his technique. Christian Zacharias succeeds in expressing the sublime grandeur of Bruckner’s music without any pathos. He deeply immerses himself in the broad dimensions of the symphony and exposes its sensitive core. Concerts will take place on October 20th in Germering, 21st in Stuttgart, 24th in Neustadt (Weinstraße), 25th in Lahr and 27th in Fürth.

In October, Christian Zacharias joined the Orchestre de Paris to perform a celebrated Beethoven programme in Paris’ Philharmonie. In the coming days, he will once again be taking the conductor’s stand alongside the renowned French orchestra to conduct, but also to play works by Mozart in the French capital on 4th and 5th of March.
Mozart once wrote: “Melody is the essence of music.” Christian Zacharias performance of Mozart’s music remains true to this adage and has succeeded in resurrecting the composer’s timeless melodies in a both elegant and passionate manner. Whether on the piano or at the conductor’s stand – his interpretations exude an honest, genuine air – a musical celebration of life that will both captivate and delight listeners.

For more than a decade, Christian Zacharias helped develop a leading sound as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra.

On numerous tours, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra has proved its reputation as a leading international chamber orchestra. A series of recordings documenting the long-standing artistic collaboration between Zacharias and the orchestra can be heard, with Mozart piano concertos, Schumann symphonies and the Berlin Symphonies by C.P.E. Bach being particularly noteworthy.

On February 13th/14th, Christian Zacharias returns to his double-duty as conductor and pianist with the orchestra performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto no. 2 and Dvořák’s Legends. The charismatic and exceptional artist should once again inspire the audiences, rejoicing in a true concert experience.

Christian Zacharias, piano

In November, Christian Zacharias’ tour will take him from Aix-en-Provence to Paris, Zurich and then on to London. He’ll be joined by the great masters Schumann, Schubert and Beethoven whose works he will perform on stage in four recitals. Zacharias offers unparalleled interpretations of German classics. With his profoundly astute and exceedingly expressive approach, he brings these works to life revealing truths that span the ages. Zacharias’ recitals promise a thought-provoking, moving experience that audiences won’t soon forget.

This weekend, the Paris Philharmonie will revolve around Beethoven. Christian Zacharias, who will conduct the Orchestre de Paris and also perform as a soloist, is dedicating three concerts to the composer. Beethoven’s 1st piano concerto already bears his unmistakable signature, demanding much of the soloist. Christian Zacharias’ keen sense of music and intellect define his intricate interpretation. The 6th symphony, whose 5 movements capture the human perception of nature, perfectly coalesces in an overarching work. Beethoven noted “More the expression of feeling than painting” on the score’s title page. The listener is left to discern the individual encounters. The weekend of music will be further complemented by the wind quintet’s performance of chamber music.

In March 2017, Christian Zacharias will return to the Philharmonie alongside the Orchestre de Paris to perform a programme featuring Mozart’s works.

Together with the Orchestre National de Lille, Christian Zacharias will be dedicating four programmes to Robert Schumann’s oeuvre. His first guest performance can be heard this week. Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse
Tugan Sokhiev, conductor
Christian Zacharias, piano

This season, Toulouse will welcome Christian Zacharias as artist in residence. To begin his term, he will delight listeners once again with an evening of piano at the Piano Festival aux Jacobins after the widely acclaimed success of last year’s performance. When the new season gets underway soon after, he will join the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse as a soloist to perform Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto under Tugan Sokhiev. He will also be presenting this musical gem at Bonn’s renowned Beethoven Festival. Ending his residency on a high note, Christian Zacharias will take to the stage in Toulouse both as conductor and soloist. The programme for his concerts in March 2017 will feature works by Schubert and Mozart.

In March, audiences can look forward to exciting concerts with Christian Zacharias both at the conductor’s stand and on the piano in Frankfurt, Lugano and Winterthur. The programme will feature Mozart, Schumann, Schubert and their French colleagues Ravel, Rameau and Bizet.

In Frankfurt, he will conduct the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester with Ravel’s suite “Ma mère l’oye“ and Schumann’s 2nd symphony composed in 1845/46 for Schumann in attempt to cure his depression.

At a mere 19 years of age, Schubert composed his 4th symphony which Zacharias will be performing in Lugano alongside the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in addition to works by Mozart. Schubert himself nick named it “die Tragische” (the tragic) owing to the minor key and its preoccupation with Beethoven.

In Winterthur, the programme will focus on French music. Written in 1872, Bizet’s orchestral suite “L’ Arlésienne” was an immediate success at its original premiere in Paris. Excerpts from Rameau’s suite “Les Indes Galantes“ as well as Mozart can also be heard.

Mozart composed the majority of his piano concertos for his own use. During the performance, he conducted the orchestra from the piano, a customary practice at the time, which Christian Zacharias will also be observing in the upcoming performances of concerts no. 23, no. 24 and no. 25. It is a genuine delight to listen to Christian Zacharias and witness him masterfully assuming the two roles of pianist and conductor.

The programme for the East Neuk Festival is now online!
The festival held in the Scottish Highlands amidst picturesque lakes and historical castles originated in 2004. The widely followed East Neuk successfully draws young artists and long-standing names alike to the Scottish Highlands. Christian Zacharias, for example, is a long-standing guest of the festival, who captivates audiences with his versatility both as a conductor, chamber musician and performer at recitals. Julian Steckel, who will be performing at the festival for the first time, will also display his surpassing musicality as well as his technical mastery in multiple concerts. Christian Zacharias and Julian Steckel will join forces for the festival’s grand finale performing Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Shostakovich’s first cello concerto as well as Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C Major.

More details on the festival and all concerts are available.

In only a few days, Christian Zacharias will embark on a month-long tour that will take him all across Europe. In selected cities, he will deliver virtuosic performances featuring an exquisite recital programme. His piano evenings have become more seldom since Christian Zacharias began conducting major orchestras making this opportunity of witnessing the pre-eminent pianist in a recital all the more special. Works by Baroque composers Scarlatti and Soler will be performed alongside Ravel’s Sonatine as well as a selection of Chopin’s scherzi and mazurkas. His profound understanding of music and charismatic stage presence make every one of his performances an unparalleled experience – in a very special, personable solo evening.

This Thursday, 24th September, and Sunday, 27th September, Christian Zacharias will take the conductor’s stand to lead the Orchestre National de France in Paris in its performance of Schubert’s “Rosamunde“ and his 8th “unfinished“ symphony and then the grand piano to play Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto.

In 1803, Beethoven himself played the original premiere in Vienna, the only one of his piano concertos in a minor key. In his current programmes, Christian Zacharias contrasts this piece with two of Schubert’s compositions. In 1823, the original premiere of the play “Rosamunde“ was also performed in Vienna. Christian Zacharias is conducting the entire stage music for the play about the young princess of Cyprus that spans 10 musical pieces in addition to the well known overture. Today, it is still unclear as to why Schubert never completed his 8th symphony. Only in 1865, after the composer had died, was the original premiere performed; it is without a doubt one of his most well known, remarkable works of music.
