Three sophisticated and well-established artists find themselves in violinist Esther Hoppe, 1st prize winner at the ARD Competition, and the two renowned BIS artists, cellist Christian Poltéra and pianist Ronald Brautigam. Presenting the program on modern piano as well as fortepiano, the trio creates delightful interpretations with new and varied nuances in sound and colour.

“The audience travelled through vast soundscapes, and experienced delight and pain in constant alternation, as in Winterreise. Light and shadow, Schubert’s instinct for melody and harmonic leaps, timbres in between sweet and bitter – everything was explored down to the smallest detail.” (Luzerner Zeitung, 26. October 2021)

Esther Hoppe | Violin
Christian Poltéra | Violoncello
Pascal Moraguès | Clarinet
Juho Pohjonen | Piano

“Messiaen combines all of this into a sensual experience that directly appeals to the listener, which is played by Poltéra and friends with immense tension. The nuances of tonal colour that Pascal Moraguès is able to elicit from his clarinet are just as beguiling as the fine dynamic nuances of Hoppe and Poltéra. Beyond the detailed tuning, Messiaen’s cosmos of timbres is explored here.” (Rheinpfalz)

For most musicians who devote themselves to chamber music, there is no way around Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps. All the less so if, like Pascal Moraguès, you had the opportunity to work on the piece with the composer himself. With this unique background knowledge, Pascal Moraguès enriches this harmonious ensemble, which has come together for the first time for the Schwetzinger Festspiele.

Program:
Schubert Piano trio B major D 898 op. 99
Messiaen Quatuor pour la fin du temps

The Staatstheater Mainz starts off the season on August 31st with a musical highlight: Christian Poltéra will present one of the most beloved cello concertos, Dvořák‘s Cello Concerto in B minor op. 104, together with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz, directed by Ariana Matiakh. Afflicted by homesickness, Dvořák wrote this piece in the years 1894/95 in the United States, musically bridging the gap between the old and the new world. Poltéra knows how to lead through the emotional depths of this piece while displaying an ease, that bestows his interpretation with a virtuoso elegance. His technical precision and charisma make Poltéra capture audiences all around the globe.

On the April 28th and 30th, Christian Poltéra will perform in Taiwan with his piano partner Hu Jung. The musicians face a great challenge: they will play all five Beethoven cello sonatas on one evening, letting the listeners experience with the development in Beethoven’s oeuvre. The two serene Sonatas op. 5 from Beethoven’s early period, the great Sonata in A major, one of the most demanding works from his middle creative period, and the two Sonatas op. 102 from his late period, standing out for their stubbornness and severity. This musical journey demands great versatility, deep musical understanding and almost inexhaustible expressiveness from the musicians, in order to live up to the lifetime of emotional richness of nuances. You can look forward to outstanding concerts with Christian Poltéra, who is exactly the right person for this challenge with his technical brilliance, sonorous and ruthless honesty.

Undoubtedly, the Trio Zimmermann is one of the most outstanding ensembles of our time. Not least of which is thanks to its top-notch cast, which includes namesake Frank Peter Zimmermann, French violist Antoine Tamestit and Swiss cellist Christian Poltéra. The trio is hailed worldwide. At the end of March, the trio goes on tour to Madrid, Berlin, Paris and Dresden bringing with it two special works from the trio literature: Schönberg’s String Trio Op. 45 and Bach’s Goldberg Variations in trio version. In his Op. 45, Schönberg deals with an almost fatal heart attack, encountered with astonishing humor but also with complex technical and musical demands. The Goldberg Variations trio requires the highest degree of accuracy in its interplay and musical agreement in order to bring together the intricate counterpoint of the work. Audiences can look forward to the very finest concerts.

As one of the most impressive musicians of his generation, Poltéra’s performance focuses on the music alone. Without great gestures, he reveals the essence of a work, with his personal timbre a hallmark of his interpretations.

Christian Poltéra has performed with almost all renowned orchestras worldwide and collaborates regularly with leading conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Bernard Haitink, John Eliot Gardiner, Paavo Järvi and Andris Nelsons. He can also be seen performing at the major European festivals. In addition to his solo career, he devotes himself enthusiastically to chamber music. The string trio concerts with Frank Peter Zimmermann and Antoine Tamestit are an integral part of the internationally important music centers. He has also been Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Days in the mountain church of Büsingen (Switzerland) since 2013. Numerous recordings reflect his versatile repertoire and have received numerous awards. Christian Poltéra is fortunate enough to play the famous and legendary cello “Mara” (1711) from Antonio Stradivari’s workshop.

We look forward to a joint start in 2018 and to being able to accompany him on his fascinating artistic path in the future.
