The Trio Gaspard released the fourth installment of their planned complete recording of Joseph Haydn’s piano trios on Friday.
As with the previous three albums, several trios — in this case, numbers 26, 36, 31, and 34 — are presented in context with a commissioned composition. For this recording, Sally Beamish contributed the piece Trance, which holds a deeply personal meaning for her: “The melancholic nature of Haydn’s [F-sharp minor] trio influenced my approach and connected with memories of my mother and her gradual descent into dementia. The title Trance suggests a meditative state but also a passage or departure: the disorienting evolution of my relationship with my mother as her personality changed, transformed, and faded.”
