Julian Steckel will celebrate his debut with the Munich Philharmonic performing two concerts that are sure to delight audiences. On 22nd and 23rd February, Julian Steckel will join the Munich Philharmonic to perform Schumann’s cello concerto in a minor under Gustavo Gimeno. While in Düsseldorf in October 1850, Schumann took only two weeks to write this work. In the autograph, he described the work as a “Konzertstück” (concert piece) and not a concert as it significantly departed from the traditional conventions of a concerto. This makes the piece uniquely challenging as Schumann employs exceedingly uniform thematic material while unleashing an emotional breadth of unprecedented proportions as is characteristic of the composer. The same themes are revisited time and again in a wide range of contexts and moods demanding a tremendously expressive capacity as well as tonal diversity. Julian Steckel rises to the occasion with his exceedingly emotional interpretation.
It goes without saying that Julian Steckel is greatly honoured to share the stage with the Munich Philharmonic, an opportunity that clearly recognises the work of this talented young artist.
