Julian Steckel – original premiere of Anno Schreier’s cello concerto

On 22nd and 23rd November, Julian Steckel will be performing the new cello concerto entitled “On a Long Strand” written by young composer Anno Schreier. He will be accompanied by the Badische Staatskapelle under Robert Trevino.
Schreier drew his inspiration for the work from the poem entitled “North” by Irish author Seamus Heaney. The concert consists of 2 slow and one lively, passionate final movement, revisiting the ideas of the first movement. The influence of traditional Irish music can be heard, though hidden beneath the relentlessly swift, repetitive motives reminiscent of frolicsome Irish folk music.

The gentle, yet full tone of Julian Steckel’s playing honours the composer’s intention to bestow the solo cello with the role of the human voice – as such, he seems more to sing the melodic lines than play them. All the while, the cellist remains fully engrossed in the dramatic, expressive and playful dialogues between the soloist and orchestra, effectively complemented by his impressive technical brilliance.
