“Rihm’s latest work combines both styles [Romantic and Contemporary]. It is dominated by lyrical sweetness, which is primarily the responsibility of the violin (Ulf Schneider), but also of the cello (Martin Löhr). Sometimes both instruments are connected in melodic intensification by unisons. Many glittering cascades of sound come from the piano (Eckhart Heiligers). Rihm nonetheless states: ‘My idea of a concerto is not primarily virtuosity, but carrying forth energy.’ The resulting sound is a friendly one, you can feel the joy of playing, of color, the joy of harmonious calm.”
