Francesco Piemontesi joins the Gewandhausorchester and Roger Norrington in Leipzig

On 5th and 6th November, the musical centre of Leipzig will welcome Francescco Piemontesi. Under Roger Norrington, he will join the Gewandhausorchester to present a rarely performed piano concerto by Antonin Dvořák – the only solo piano concerto, which he composed in 1876. The autograph bears witness to the composer’s struggle with the solo concerto genre with its many corrections, amendments and cuts. Dvořák himself commented on this work: “I see that I am unable to write a solo concerto.“ This statement of the composer is widely exaggerative in light of the impressive result: The extraordinary and fascinating concerto Dvořák composed bestows the piano with a leading part, which at the same time is not opposed by the orchestra. Francesco Piemontesi has a masterful command of the exceedingly intricate, demanding part for the piano drawing on his impeccable technique and sophisticated musical approach. A CD recording of the same concert performed by Piemontesi with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Jiri
Belohlavek is also available.
