Reinhold Friedrich

Since winning first prize at the 1986 ARD International Competition in Munich, Reinhold Friedrich has been a regular guest on the important stages of the international music scene. His debuts at the Berliner Festwochen in 1982 performing Luciano Berio’s Sequenza X, and the Musikverein Vienna in 1994 with Joseph Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, played on a historic “keyed trumpet”, are evidence of the wide range of his activities beginning from the very first years of his career. In 2003, he was named by Claudio Abbado as solo trumpet of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and is Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra brass ensembles.

Reinhold Friedrich is dedicated to the notion that both contemporary and ancient music belong closely together and should not be considered a contrast. On one end of the spectrum, he has performed on historical instruments with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Wiener Akademie, Concerto Melante and La Stagione Frankfurt, yet on the other, he has delivered world premieres of works by Wolfgang Rihm, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Rebecca Saunders, Hans Werner Henze and Herbert Willi. The trumpet concertos of Herbert Willi (“Eirene”) and Bernd Alois Zimmermann (“Nobody Knows the Trouble I See”), whose recording was awarded the ECHO Classic, are of key importance in his broad repertoire. He was also awarded the ECHO Classic as Instrumentalist of the Year 2013 for his CD “Russian Trumpet Concertos”, released by Dabringhaus & Grimm.

As a soloist, he appeared with orchestras such as the Bamberger Symphoniker, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester, NDR- and HR-Sinfonieorchester, Wiener Symphoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, BBC Symphony Orchestra London, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France,  the chamber orchestras of Vienna and Basel as well as the Berlin Baroque Soloists. His performances include collaborations with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Philippe Herreweghe, Semyon Bychkov, Dennis Russell Davies, Peter Eötvös, Dmitrij Kitajenko, Martin Haselböck, Christopher Hogwood, Eliahu Inbal, Krystjan and Neeme Järvi, Sir Neville Marriner, Ingo Metzmacher, Jonathan Nott, Kazushi Ono and Hans Zender.

Rheinhold Friedrich’s regular chamber music partners include Robyn Schulkowsky (percussion), Thomas Duis (piano), Martin Lücker (organ) and Sebastian Küchler-Blessing (organ). Since its foundation in 2013 he is also a member of the ensemble “L’éventail de Jeanne”, consisting of Claudio Bohórquez (violoncello), Sascha Armbruster (saxophone) and Eriko Takezawa (piano).

Numerous recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, Capriccio, Phoenix, Oehms Classics, Wergo, CPO and Dabringhaus & Grimm document his multifarious activities. The latest recordings “Trumpet and Organ” with the organist Iveta Apkalna and “Assisi Christmas Cantatas” with Ruth Ziesak, Ingeborg Danz and the ensemble L’Arte del Mondo have been published for the Phoenix label.

Reinhold Friedrich is Professor of Trumpet at the Karlsruhe University of Music and Honorary Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki as well as in Hiroshima, Japan. His master classes are well-known and in great demand worldwide. His renowned students are professors in Hannover, Freiburg, Essen, Detmold and Budapest, among others and can be found performing with orchestras in Moscow, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart.
