Duo Thomas Zehetmair & Ruth Killius

Thomas Zehetmair, Violin
Ruth Killius, Viola

The Duo Thomas Zehetmair and Ruth Killius has left its mark in national and international concert halls, not least for their versatile repertoire. The duo performs masterpieces of the repertoire both for violin and viola, which are rarely programmed due to the unusual combination – and in addition combines them with transcriptions of compositions for other instruments.

Thomas Zehetmair and Ruth Killius are founding members of the Zehetmair Quartet which was awarded the Paul Hindemith Prize by the city of Hanau for its outstanding musical abilities. Alongside their chamber music activities, both musicians appear globally as soloists in the most prestigious concert venues. Thomas Zehetmair is Principle Conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur since the season 2016/17. Ruth Killius will start as artist in residence with the Augsburger Philharmoniker this season.

Their way of playing together is strongly influenced by their longterm experience as a duo making their sound very sharpenend and well balanced with each other. Their unique sound can be heard on several recordings. Their album “Manto and Madrigals”, which is inspired by Scelsi’s “Manto” for a singing viola player with works by Bartók, Holliger and Martinů was published by ECM in 2011.

In Summer 2016 the duo performed at the renowned Aldeburgh Festival. The program including works by Martinů, Bartók, Skalkottas offered a high class variety to the audience.

In 2016/17 the duo will be performing in Basle, Rostock as well as at the Wigmore Hall London.
